CVE-2018-10903 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.5) affecting python-cryptography, openstack, ubuntu linux. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

A flaw was found in python-cryptography versions between >=1.9.0 and <2.3. The finalize_with_tag API did not enforce a minimum tag length. If a user did not validate the input length prior to passing it to finalize_with_tag an attacker could craft an invalid payload with a shortened tag (e.g. 1 byte) such that they would have a 1 in 256 chance of passing the MAC check. GCM tag forgeries can cause key leakage.

Timeline

cryptography python-cryptography UPGRADE
Affected: >= 1.9.0 and < 2.3
Fixed in: 2.3
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 1.9.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy python-cryptography || rpm -q python-cryptography || python-cryptography --version
2. UPGRADE to 2.3 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade python-cryptography
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade python-cryptography
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 1.9.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison python-cryptography sudo apt install python-cryptography=<VERSION_BEFORE_1.9.0> sudo apt-mark hold python-cryptography
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list python-cryptography sudo dnf downgrade python-cryptography-<VERSION_BEFORE_1.9.0> sudo dnf versionlock add python-cryptography
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
redhat openstack DOWNGRADE
Affected: 13
Fixed in: no fixed release known
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 13
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy openstack || rpm -q openstack || openstack --version
2. No fixed release: DOWNGRADE to a release before 13 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison openstack sudo apt install openstack=<VERSION_BEFORE_13> sudo apt-mark hold openstack
2. No fixed release: DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list openstack sudo dnf downgrade openstack-<VERSION_BEFORE_13> sudo dnf versionlock add openstack
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
canonical ubuntu linux MITIGATE
Affected: 18.04
Fixed in: no fixed release known
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 18.04
Check your OS release
cat /etc/os-release; uname -r
Debian / Ubuntu
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
