CVE-2019-12526 is a critical-severity flaw (CVSS 9.8) affecting squid, ubuntu linux, fedora. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

An issue was discovered in Squid before 4.9. URN response handling in Squid suffers from a heap-based buffer overflow. When receiving data from a remote server in response to an URN request, Squid fails to ensure that the response can fit within the buffer. This leads to attacker controlled data overflowing in the heap.

Timeline

squid-cache squid UPGRADE
Affected: >= 3.0 and <= 3.5.28 · >= 4.0 and <= 4.8
Fixed in: newer than 4.8
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 3.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy squid || rpm -q squid || squid --version
2. UPGRADE to newer than 4.8 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade squid
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade squid
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 3.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison squid sudo apt install squid=<VERSION_BEFORE_3.0> sudo apt-mark hold squid
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list squid sudo dnf downgrade squid-<VERSION_BEFORE_3.0> sudo dnf versionlock add squid
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
