CVE-2019-3822: libcurl versions from 7.36.0 to before 7.64.0 are vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow CRITICAL 9.8 REMOTE WATCHLIST UPGRADE MITIGATE MITIGATE
CVE-2019-3822 is a critical-severity flaw (CVSS 9.8) affecting libcurl, ubuntu linux, debian linux. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.
libcurl versions from 7.36.0 to before 7.64.0 are vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow. The function creating an outgoing NTLM type-3 header (`lib/vauth/ntlm.c:Curl_auth_create_ntlm_type3_message()`), generates the request HTTP header contents based on previously received data. The check that exists to prevent the local buffer from getting overflowed is implemented wrongly (using unsigned math) and as such it does not prevent the overflow

Affected: >= 7.36.0 and < 7.64.0
Fixed in: 7.64.0
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 7.36.0
1. Check installed version
Copy apt-cache policy libcurl || rpm -q libcurl || libcurl --version
2. UPGRADE to 7.64.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
Copy sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade libcurl
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
Copy sudo dnf upgrade libcurl
Note
Copy Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 7.36.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
Copy apt-cache madison libcurl
sudo apt install libcurl=<VERSION_BEFORE_7.36.0>
sudo apt-mark hold libcurl
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
Copy dnf --showduplicates list libcurl
sudo dnf downgrade libcurl-<VERSION_BEFORE_7.36.0>
sudo dnf versionlock add libcurl
Downgrade risk
Copy Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Copy Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
