CVE-2020-13817 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.4) affecting ntp, cloud backup, clustered data ontap. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

ntpd in ntp before 4.2.8p14 and 4.3.x before 4.3.100 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon exit or system time change) by predicting transmit timestamps for use in spoofed packets. The victim must be relying on unauthenticated IPv4 time sources. There must be an off-path attacker who can query time from the victim's ntpd instance.

Why this priority

  • High severity
  • Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

sudo dnf upgrade ntp
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 4.2.8 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison ntp sudo apt install ntp=<VERSION_BEFORE_4.2.8> sudo apt-mark hold ntp

dnf --showduplicates list ntp sudo dnf downgrade ntp-<VERSION_BEFORE_4.2.8> sudo dnf versionlock add ntp
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
