CVE-2020-15180 is a critical-severity flaw (CVSS 9.0) affecting mariadb, debian linux, xtradb cluster. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

A flaw was found in the mysql-wsrep component of mariadb. Lack of input sanitization in `wsrep_sst_method` allows for command injection that can be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on galera cluster nodes. This threatens the system's confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This flaw affects mariadb versions before 10.1.47, before 10.2.34, before 10.3.25, before 10.4.15 and before 10.5.6.

Why this priority

  • Critical severity
  • EPSS top 7%: very likely to be exploited
  • Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action
  • On your watchlist

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Timeline

mariadb mariadb UPGRADE
Affected: >= 10.1.0 and < 10.1.47 · >= 10.2.0 and < 10.2.34 · >= 10.3.0 and < 10.3.25 · >= 10.4.0 and < 10.4.15 · >= 10.5.0 and < 10.5.6
Fixed in: 10.1.47, 10.2.34, 10.3.25, 10.4.15, 10.5.6
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 10.1.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy mariadb || rpm -q mariadb || mariadb --version
2. UPGRADE to 10.1.47 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade mariadb
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade mariadb
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 10.1.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison mariadb sudo apt install mariadb=<VERSION_BEFORE_10.1.0> sudo apt-mark hold mariadb
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list mariadb sudo dnf downgrade mariadb-<VERSION_BEFORE_10.1.0> sudo dnf versionlock add mariadb
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
