CVE-2021-43608: Doctrine DBAL 3.x before 3.1.4 allows SQL Injection

CRITICAL 9.8REMOTEUPGRADE

CVE-2021-43608 is a critical-severity flaw (CVSS 9.8) affecting database abstraction layer. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

Doctrine DBAL 3.x before 3.1.4 allows SQL Injection. The escaping of offset and length inputs to the generation of a LIMIT clause was not probably cast to an integer, allowing SQL injection to take place if application developers passed unescaped user input to the DBAL QueryBuilder or any other API that ultimately uses the AbstractPlatform::modifyLimitQuery API.

Why this priority

  • Critical severity
  • Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Timeline

doctrine-project database abstraction layer UPGRADE
Affected: >= 3.0.0 and < 3.1.4
Fixed in: 3.1.4
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 3.0.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy database-abstraction-layer || rpm -q database-abstraction-layer || database-abstraction-layer --version
2. UPGRADE to 3.1.4 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade database-abstraction-layer
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade database-abstraction-layer
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 3.0.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison database-abstraction-layer sudo apt install database-abstraction-layer=<VERSION_BEFORE_3.0.0> sudo apt-mark hold database-abstraction-layer
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list database-abstraction-layer sudo dnf downgrade database-abstraction-layer-<VERSION_BEFORE_3.0.0> sudo dnf versionlock add database-abstraction-layer
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
