CVE-2022-39377 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.0) affecting sysstat, debian linux, fedora. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

sysstat is a set of system performance tools for the Linux operating system. On 32 bit systems, in versions 9.1.16 and newer but prior to 12.7.1, allocate_structures contains a size_t overflow in sa_common.c. The allocate_structures function insufficiently checks bounds before arithmetic multiplication, allowing for an overflow in the size allocated for the buffer representing system activities. This issue may lead to Remote Code Execution (RCE).

Timeline

sysstat project sysstat UPGRADE
Affected: >= 9.1.6 and < 12.6.1
Fixed in: 12.6.1
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 9.1.6
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy sysstat || rpm -q sysstat || sysstat --version
2. UPGRADE to 12.6.1 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade sysstat
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade sysstat
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 9.1.6 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison sysstat sudo apt install sysstat=<VERSION_BEFORE_9.1.6> sudo apt-mark hold sysstat
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list sysstat sudo dnf downgrade sysstat-<VERSION_BEFORE_9.1.6> sudo dnf versionlock add sysstat
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
