MEDIUM 5.9REMOTEUPGRADEUPGRADEUPGRADE

CVE-2022-43552 is a medium-severity flaw (CVSS 5.9) affecting curl, macos, universal forwarder. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

A use after free vulnerability exists in curl <7.87.0. Curl can be asked to *tunnel* virtually all protocols it supports through an HTTP proxy. HTTP proxies can (and often do) deny such tunnel operations. When getting denied to tunnel the specific protocols SMB or TELNET, curl would use a heap-allocated struct after it had been freed, in its transfer shutdown code path.

Why this priority

  • Public exploit reference
  • Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
apple macos UPGRADE
Affected: >= 13.0 and < 13.3
Fixed in: 13.3
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 13.0
Check your OS release
cat /etc/os-release; uname -r
Debian / Ubuntu
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
Windows
Install the latest cumulative update from Windows Update
If no patch exists yet
OS downgrades are not safe. Apply the vendor mitigation from the advisory and restrict exposure.
splunk universal forwarder UPGRADE
Affected: >= 8.2.0 and < 8.2.12 · >= 9.0.0 and < 9.0.6 · 9.1.0
Fixed in: 8.2.12, 9.0.6

2. UPGRADE to 8.2.12 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade universal-forwarder
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade universal-forwarder
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 8.2.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison universal-forwarder sudo apt install universal-forwarder=<VERSION_BEFORE_8.2.0> sudo apt-mark hold universal-forwarder
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list universal-forwarder sudo dnf downgrade universal-forwarder-<VERSION_BEFORE_8.2.0> sudo dnf versionlock add universal-forwarder
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
