CVE-2024-12084 is a critical-severity flaw (CVSS 9.8) affecting rsync, almalinux, arch linux. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

A heap-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the rsync daemon. This issue is due to improper handling of attacker-controlled checksum lengths (s2length) in the code. When MAX_DIGEST_LEN exceeds the fixed SUM_LENGTH (16 bytes), an attacker can write out of bounds in the sum2 buffer.

Why this priority

  • Critical severity
  • EPSS top 1%: very likely to be exploited
  • Public exploit reference
  • CISA SSVC: automatable with total technical impact
  • Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action
  • On your watchlist

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

samba rsync DOWNGRADE
Affected: 3.2.7 · 3.3.0
Fixed in: no fixed release known
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 3.2.7
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy rsync || rpm -q rsync || rsync --version
2. No fixed release: DOWNGRADE to a release before 3.2.7 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison rsync sudo apt install rsync=<VERSION_BEFORE_3.2.7> sudo apt-mark hold rsync
2. No fixed release: DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list rsync sudo dnf downgrade rsync-<VERSION_BEFORE_3.2.7> sudo dnf versionlock add rsync
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
