Patch now
MEDIUM 6.8EXPLOITEDUPGRADEMITIGATE

CVE-2024-37085 is a medium-severity flaw (CVSS 6.8) affecting cloud foundation, esxi, reported as exploited in the wild. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

VMware ESXi contains an authentication bypass vulnerability. A malicious actor with sufficient Active Directory (AD) permissions can gain full access to an ESXi host that was previously configured to use AD for user management https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/09/joining-vsphere-hosts-to-active-directory.html by re-creating the configured AD group ('ESXi Admins' by default) after it was deleted from AD.

Why this priority

  • EPSS top 2%: very likely to be exploited
  • Exploited in the wild (CISA KEV)
  • Used in ransomware campaigns

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Affected: >= 4.0 and < 5.2
Fixed in: 5.2
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 4.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy cloud-foundation || rpm -q cloud-foundation || cloud-foundation --version
2. UPGRADE to 5.2 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade cloud-foundation
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)

Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 4.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison cloud-foundation sudo apt install cloud-foundation=<VERSION_BEFORE_4.0> sudo apt-mark hold cloud-foundation

dnf --showduplicates list cloud-foundation sudo dnf downgrade cloud-foundation-<VERSION_BEFORE_4.0> sudo dnf versionlock add cloud-foundation
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
