HIGH 7.4REMOTEUPGRADE

CVE-2024-38365 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.4) affecting btcd. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

btcd is an alternative full node bitcoin implementation written in Go (golang). The btcd Bitcoin client (versions 0.10 to 0.24) did not correctly re-implement Bitcoin Core's "FindAndDelete()" functionality. This logic is consensus-critical: the difference in behavior with the other Bitcoin clients can lead to btcd clients accepting an invalid Bitcoin block (or rejecting a valid one). This consensus failure can be leveraged to cause a chain split

Why this priority

  • High severity
  • Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Timeline

btcd project btcd UPGRADE
Affected: >= 0.10.0 and < 0.24.2
Fixed in: 0.24.2
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 0.10.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy btcd || rpm -q btcd || btcd --version
2. UPGRADE to 0.24.2 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade btcd
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade btcd
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 0.10.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison btcd sudo apt install btcd=<VERSION_BEFORE_0.10.0> sudo apt-mark hold btcd
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list btcd sudo dnf downgrade btcd-<VERSION_BEFORE_0.10.0> sudo dnf versionlock add btcd
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
