CVE-2024-56201: Jinja is an extensible templating engine

37
Routine
HIGH 8.8UPGRADE

CVE-2024-56201 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 8.8) affecting jinja. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

Jinja is an extensible templating engine. In versions on the 3.x branch prior to 3.1.5, a bug in the Jinja compiler allows an attacker that controls both the content and filename of a template to execute arbitrary Python code, regardless of if Jinja's sandbox is used. To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker needs to control both the filename and the contents of a template. Whether that is the case depends on the type of application using Jinja.

Affected: >= 3.0.0 and < 3.1.5
Fixed in: 3.1.5
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 3.0.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy jinja || rpm -q jinja || jinja --version
2. UPGRADE to 3.1.5 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade jinja

sudo dnf upgrade jinja
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 3.0.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison jinja sudo apt install jinja=<VERSION_BEFORE_3.0.0> sudo apt-mark hold jinja
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list jinja sudo dnf downgrade jinja-<VERSION_BEFORE_3.0.0> sudo dnf versionlock add jinja
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
