CVE-2024-7254: Any project that parses untrusted Protocol Buffers data containing an arbitrary number of nested groups / seri HIGH 7.5 REMOTE UPGRADE UPGRADE UPGRADE
CVE-2024-7254 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.5) affecting protobuf, protobuf-java, protobuf-javalite. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.
Any project that parses untrusted Protocol Buffers data containing an arbitrary number of nested groups / series of SGROUP tags can corrupted by exceeding the stack limit i.e. StackOverflow. Parsing nested groups as unknown fields with DiscardUnknownFieldsParser or Java Protobuf Lite parser, or against Protobuf map fields, creates unbounded recursions that can be abused by an attacker.
Why this priority High severity Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action A fixed release or distro patch exists.
