LOW 3.2UPGRADE

CVE-2025-29087 is a low-severity flaw (CVSS 3.2) affecting sqlite. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

In SQLite 3.44.0 through 3.49.0 before 3.49.1, the concat_ws() SQL function can cause memory to be written beyond the end of a malloc-allocated buffer. If the separator argument is attacker-controlled and has a large string (e.g., 2MB or more), an integer overflow occurs in calculating the size of the result buffer, and thus malloc may not allocate enough memory.

Why this priority

  • No elevated risk signals yet

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Timeline

sqlite sqlite UPGRADE
Affected: >= 3.44.0 and < 3.49.1
Fixed in: 3.49.1
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 3.44.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy sqlite || rpm -q sqlite || sqlite --version
2. UPGRADE to 3.49.1 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade sqlite
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade sqlite
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 3.44.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison sqlite sudo apt install sqlite=<VERSION_BEFORE_3.44.0> sudo apt-mark hold sqlite
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list sqlite sudo dnf downgrade sqlite-<VERSION_BEFORE_3.44.0> sudo dnf versionlock add sqlite
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
