HIGH 8.8UPGRADE

CVE-2025-62507 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 8.8) affecting redis. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

Redis is an open source, in-memory database that persists on disk. In versions 8.2.0 and above, a user can run the XACKDEL command with multiple ID's and trigger a stack buffer overflow, which may potentially lead to remote code execution. This issue is fixed in version 8.2.3. To workaround this issue without patching the redis-server executable is to prevent users from executing XACKDEL operation. This can be done using ACL to restrict XACKDEL c

Timeline

redis redis UPGRADE
Affected: >= 8.2.0 and < 8.2.3
Fixed in: 8.2.3
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 8.2.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy redis || rpm -q redis || redis --version
2. UPGRADE to 8.2.3 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade redis
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade redis
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 8.2.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison redis sudo apt install redis=<VERSION_BEFORE_8.2.0> sudo apt-mark hold redis
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list redis sudo dnf downgrade redis-<VERSION_BEFORE_8.2.0> sudo dnf versionlock add redis
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
