MEDIUM 6.5UPGRADE

CVE-2026-109949 is a medium-severity flaw (CVSS 6.5) affecting freerdp. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains an improper restriction of excessive authentication attempts in its virtual smartcard GIDS implementation, which stores the PIN retry counter per-handle. A malicious RDP server can exhaust the counter with VERIFY APDUs, then request a new SCardConnect to reset attempts, enabling unbounded online brute-forcing of the configured smartcard PIN.

Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
