CVE-2026-121749: Node Version Manager (nvm) is a POSIX-compliant shell function for managing multiple node.js versions

LOW 3.3UPGRADE

CVE-2026-121749 is a low-severity flaw (CVSS 3.3) affecting nvm. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

Node Version Manager (nvm) is a POSIX-compliant shell function for managing multiple node.js versions. In versions 0.5.0 through 0.40.8, the requested version pattern is passed to `grep` as a bare argument, without `-e`, in `nvm_ls_remote_index_tab`, `nvm_remote_version`, and `nvm_ls_cached`. A `.nvmrc` whose first line starts with `-`, such as `-Rohenpm_[A-Za-z0-9]*`, is parsed as grep options; with GNU grep, `-R` searches the current directory

Why this priority

  • No elevated risk signals yet

Timeline

nvm-sh nvm UPGRADE
Affected: >= 0.5.0 and < 0.41.0
Fixed in: 0.41.0
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 0.5.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy nvm || rpm -q nvm || nvm --version
2. UPGRADE to 0.41.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade nvm
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade nvm
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 0.5.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison nvm sudo apt install nvm=<VERSION_BEFORE_0.5.0> sudo apt-mark hold nvm
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list nvm sudo dnf downgrade nvm-<VERSION_BEFORE_0.5.0> sudo dnf versionlock add nvm
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
