CVE-2026-3288 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 8.8) affecting ingress-nginx. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

A security issue was discovered in ingress-nginx where the `nginx.ingress.kubernetes.io/rewrite-target` Ingress annotation can be used to inject configuration into nginx. This can lead to arbitrary code execution in the context of the ingress-nginx controller, and disclosure of Secrets accessible to the controller. (Note that in the default installation, the controller can access all Secrets cluster-wide.)

Why this priority

  • High severity
  • EPSS top 6%: very likely to be exploited
  • CISA SSVC: public proof of concept

Timeline

kubernetes ingress-nginx UPGRADE
Affected: < 1.13.8 · >= 1.14.0 and < 1.14.4
Fixed in: 1.13.8, 1.14.4
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 1.14.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy ingress-nginx || rpm -q ingress-nginx || ingress-nginx --version
2. UPGRADE to 1.13.8 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade ingress-nginx
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade ingress-nginx
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 1.14.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison ingress-nginx sudo apt install ingress-nginx=<VERSION_BEFORE_1.14.0> sudo apt-mark hold ingress-nginx
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list ingress-nginx sudo dnf downgrade ingress-nginx-<VERSION_BEFORE_1.14.0> sudo dnf versionlock add ingress-nginx
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
