CVE-2026-32948: sbt is a build tool for Scala, Java, and others

HIGH 7.8UPGRADE

CVE-2026-32948 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.8) affecting sbt. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

sbt is a build tool for Scala, Java, and others. From version 0.9.5 to before version 1.12.7, on Windows, sbt uses Process("cmd", "/c", ...) to run VCS commands (git, hg, svn). The URI fragment (branch, tag, revision) is user-controlled via the build definition and passed to these commands without validation. Because cmd /c interprets &, |, and ; as command separators, a malicious fragment can execute arbitrary commands. This issue has been patch

Affected: >= 0.9.5 and < 1.12.7
Fixed in: 1.12.7
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 0.9.5
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy sbt || rpm -q sbt || sbt --version
2. UPGRADE to 1.12.7 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade sbt
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade sbt
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 0.9.5 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison sbt sudo apt install sbt=<VERSION_BEFORE_0.9.5> sudo apt-mark hold sbt
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list sbt sudo dnf downgrade sbt-<VERSION_BEFORE_0.9.5> sudo dnf versionlock add sbt
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
