MEDIUM 4.4WATCHLISTUPGRADE

CVE-2026-35206 is a medium-severity flaw (CVSS 4.4) affecting helm. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

Helm is a package manager for Charts for Kubernetes. In Helm versions <=3.20.1 and <=4.1.3, a specially crafted Chart will cause helm pull --untar [chart URL | repo/chartname] to write the Chart's contents to the immediate output directory (as defaulted to the current working directory; or as given by the --destination and --untardir flags), rather than the expected output directory suffixed by the chart's name. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.

Timeline

helm helm UPGRADE
Affected: < 3.20.2 · >= 4.0.0 and < 4.1.4
Fixed in: 3.20.2, 4.1.4
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 4.0.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy helm || rpm -q helm || helm --version
2. UPGRADE to 3.20.2 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade helm
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade helm
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 4.0.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison helm sudo apt install helm=<VERSION_BEFORE_4.0.0> sudo apt-mark hold helm
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list helm sudo dnf downgrade helm-<VERSION_BEFORE_4.0.0> sudo dnf versionlock add helm
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
