CRITICAL 9.1REMOTEUPGRADE

CVE-2026-39847 is a critical-severity flaw (CVSS 9.1) affecting emmett. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

Emmett is a full-stack Python web framework designed with simplicity. From 2.5.0 to before 2.8.1, the RSGI static handler for Emmett's internal assets (/__emmett__ paths) is vulnerable to path traversal attacks. An attacker can use ../ sequences (eg /__emmett__/../rsgi/handlers.py) to read arbitrary files outside the assets directory. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.8.1.

Why this priority

  • Critical severity
  • Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action

Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 2.5.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison emmett sudo apt install emmett=<VERSION_BEFORE_2.5.0> sudo apt-mark hold emmett
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list emmett sudo dnf downgrade emmett-<VERSION_BEFORE_2.5.0> sudo dnf versionlock add emmett
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
