CVE-2026-41681: rust-openssl provides OpenSSL bindings for the Rust programming language

HIGH 7.5REMOTEWATCHLISTUPGRADE

CVE-2026-41681 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.5) affecting rust-openssl. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

rust-openssl provides OpenSSL bindings for the Rust programming language. From 0.10.39 to before 0.10.78, EVP_DigestFinal() always writes EVP_MD_CTX_size(ctx) to the out buffer. If out is smaller than that, MdCtxRef::digest_final() writes past its end, usually corrupting the stack. This is reachable from safe Rust. This vulnerability is fixed in 0.10.78.

Timeline

rust-openssl project rust-openssl UPGRADE
Affected: >= 0.10.39 and < 0.10.78
Fixed in: 0.10.78
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 0.10.39
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy rust-openssl || rpm -q rust-openssl || rust-openssl --version
2. UPGRADE to 0.10.78 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade rust-openssl
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade rust-openssl
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 0.10.39 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison rust-openssl sudo apt install rust-openssl=<VERSION_BEFORE_0.10.39> sudo apt-mark hold rust-openssl
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list rust-openssl sudo dnf downgrade rust-openssl-<VERSION_BEFORE_0.10.39> sudo dnf versionlock add rust-openssl
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
