CVE-2026-42198 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.5) affecting postgresql jdbc driver. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

pgjdbc is an open source postgresql JDBC Driver. From version 42.2.0 to before version 42.7.11, pgjdbc is vulnerable to a client-side denial of service during SCRAM-SHA-256 authentication. A malicious server can instruct the driver to perform SCRAM authentication with a very large iteration count. With a large enough value, the client spends an unbounded amount of CPU time inside PBKDF2 before authentication can fail. A single attempt ties up a C

Timeline

postgresql postgresql jdbc driver UPGRADE
Affected: >= 42.2.0 and < 42.7.11
Fixed in: 42.7.11
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 42.2.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy postgresql-jdbc-driver || rpm -q postgresql-jdbc-driver || postgresql-jdbc-driver --version
2. UPGRADE to 42.7.11 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade postgresql-jdbc-driver
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade postgresql-jdbc-driver
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 42.2.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison postgresql-jdbc-driver sudo apt install postgresql-jdbc-driver=<VERSION_BEFORE_42.2.0> sudo apt-mark hold postgresql-jdbc-driver
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list postgresql-jdbc-driver sudo dnf downgrade postgresql-jdbc-driver-<VERSION_BEFORE_42.2.0> sudo dnf versionlock add postgresql-jdbc-driver
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
