CVE-2026-43908 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 8.8) affecting openimageio. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image file format relevant to VFX / animation. Prior to 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0, a signed 32-bit integer overflow in the pixel-loop index expression i * 3 inside ConvertCbYCrYToRGB() causes the function to compute a large negative pointer offset into the output buffer, producing an out-of-bounds write that crashes the process. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.0.18.0

Why this priority

  • High severity

Fixed in: 3.0.18.0, 3.1.13.0
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 3.1.4.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy openimageio || rpm -q openimageio || openimageio --version
2. UPGRADE to 3.0.18.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade openimageio
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade openimageio
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 3.1.4.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison openimageio sudo apt install openimageio=<VERSION_BEFORE_3.1.4.0> sudo apt-mark hold openimageio

dnf --showduplicates list openimageio sudo dnf downgrade openimageio-<VERSION_BEFORE_3.1.4.0> sudo dnf versionlock add openimageio
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
