CVE-2026-49014: In GDAL 3.1.0 through 3.13.0, scanForGeometryContainers in the netCDF driver allows code execution via a stack

HIGH 7.4UPGRADE

CVE-2026-49014 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.4) affecting gdal. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

In GDAL 3.1.0 through 3.13.0, scanForGeometryContainers in the netCDF driver allows code execution via a stack-based buffer overflow. It reads a geometry attribute into a fixed-size stack buffer without validating the attribute length. The attacker embeds the exploit as an oversized geometry attribute in a crafted NetCDF file. This achieves arbitrary code execution on the server running GDAL. This is in frmts/netcdf/netcdfsg.cpp.

osgeo gdal UPGRADE
Affected: >= 3.1.0 and <= 3.13.0
Fixed in: newer than 3.13.0
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 3.1.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy gdal || rpm -q gdal || gdal --version
2. UPGRADE to newer than 3.13.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade gdal
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade gdal
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 3.1.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison gdal sudo apt install gdal=<VERSION_BEFORE_3.1.0> sudo apt-mark hold gdal
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list gdal sudo dnf downgrade gdal-<VERSION_BEFORE_3.1.0> sudo dnf versionlock add gdal
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
