CVE-2026-56378 is a low-severity flaw (CVSS 3.7) affecting imagemagick. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

ImageMagick before 7.1.2-15 (and 6.x before 6.9.13-40) contains a heap out-of-bounds read in the PCD coder's DecodeImage loop. A crafted PCD file can trigger a one-byte heap out-of-bounds read during image decoding, resulting in denial of service and potential disclosure of an adjacent heap byte.

Timeline

imagemagick imagemagick UPGRADE
Affected: >= 6.9.0-0 and < 6.9.13-40 · >= 7.1.2-0 and < 7.1.2-15
Fixed in: 6.9.13-40, 7.1.2-15
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 6.9.0-0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy imagemagick || rpm -q imagemagick || imagemagick --version
2. UPGRADE to 6.9.13-40 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade imagemagick
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade imagemagick
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 6.9.0-0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison imagemagick sudo apt install imagemagick=<VERSION_BEFORE_6.9.0-0> sudo apt-mark hold imagemagick
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list imagemagick sudo dnf downgrade imagemagick-<VERSION_BEFORE_6.9.0-0> sudo dnf versionlock add imagemagick
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
