MEDIUM 6.5UPGRADE

CVE-2026-63136 is a medium-severity flaw (CVSS 6.5) affecting elasticsearch. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

Uncontrolled Resource Consumption (CWE-400) in Elasticsearch can lead to denial of service via Excessive Allocation (CAPEC-130). A user with search privileges can submit a specially crafted search request that causes a data node to exhaust available heap memory, resulting in node unavailability and cluster degradation. An attacker could leverage this vulnerability to cause cluster downtime requiring manual intervention to restore service.

Timeline

elastic elasticsearch UPGRADE
Affected: >= 8.0.0 and < 8.19.15 · >= 9.0.0 and < 9.2.9 · >= 9.3.0 and < 9.3.4
Fixed in: 8.19.15, 9.2.9, 9.3.4
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 8.0.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy elasticsearch || rpm -q elasticsearch || elasticsearch --version
2. UPGRADE to 8.19.15 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade elasticsearch
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade elasticsearch
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 8.0.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison elasticsearch sudo apt install elasticsearch=<VERSION_BEFORE_8.0.0> sudo apt-mark hold elasticsearch
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list elasticsearch sudo dnf downgrade elasticsearch-<VERSION_BEFORE_8.0.0> sudo dnf versionlock add elasticsearch
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
