CVE-2026-63263 is a medium-severity flaw (CVSS 6.5) affecting elasticsearch. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

Uncontrolled Resource Consumption (CWE-400) in Elasticsearch can lead to denial of service via Exponential Data Expansion (CAPEC-197). An authenticated user may submit a specially crafted query to the ES|QL engine that causes exponential CPU consumption during query evaluation. Because the resource exhaustion persists beyond query completion, repeated requests can fully exhaust the available query worker resources, rendering ES|QL queries unavail

Timeline

elastic elasticsearch UPGRADE
Affected: >= 8.0.0 and < 8.19.19 · >= 9.0.0 and < 9.3.8 · >= 9.4.0 and < 9.4.4
Fixed in: 8.19.19, 9.3.8, 9.4.4
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 8.0.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy elasticsearch || rpm -q elasticsearch || elasticsearch --version
2. UPGRADE to 8.19.19 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade elasticsearch
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade elasticsearch
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 8.0.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison elasticsearch sudo apt install elasticsearch=<VERSION_BEFORE_8.0.0> sudo apt-mark hold elasticsearch
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list elasticsearch sudo dnf downgrade elasticsearch-<VERSION_BEFORE_8.0.0> sudo dnf versionlock add elasticsearch
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
