CVE-2026-64832 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 8.8) affecting ffmpeg. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

FFmpeg versions 4.4 through 8.1.2 contain a double-free vulnerability in the NVIDIA NVDEC hardware decoder within libavcodec/nvdec.c that allows attackers to trigger memory corruption by supplying a crafted video file. When no decoder surfaces remain, the ff_nvdec_start_frame_sep_ref error path frees memory via nvdec_fdd_priv_free while the calling layer subsequently frees the same frame description data, resulting in a double-free of the underly

Timeline

ffmpeg ffmpeg UPGRADE
Affected: >= 4.4 and <= 8.1.2
Fixed in: newer than 8.1.2
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 4.4
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy ffmpeg || rpm -q ffmpeg || ffmpeg --version
2. UPGRADE to newer than 8.1.2 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade ffmpeg
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade ffmpeg
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 4.4 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison ffmpeg sudo apt install ffmpeg=<VERSION_BEFORE_4.4> sudo apt-mark hold ffmpeg
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list ffmpeg sudo dnf downgrade ffmpeg-<VERSION_BEFORE_4.4> sudo dnf versionlock add ffmpeg
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
