CVE-2026-6846 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.8) affecting binutils, hardened images, openshift container platform. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

A flaw was found in binutils. A heap-buffer-overflow vulnerability exists when processing a specially crafted XCOFF (Extended Common Object File Format) object file during linking. A local attacker could trick a user into processing this malicious file, which could lead to arbitrary code execution, allowing the attacker to run unauthorized commands, or cause a denial of service, making the system unavailable.

Timeline

gnu binutils UPGRADE
Affected: <= 2.46
Fixed in: newer than 2.46
Safe to downgrade to: no unaffected older release
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy binutils || rpm -q binutils || binutils --version
2. UPGRADE to newer than 2.46 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade binutils
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade binutils
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
redhat hardened images MITIGATE
Affected: all versions
Fixed in: no fixed release known
Safe to downgrade to: no unaffected older release
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy hardened-images || rpm -q hardened-images || hardened-images --version

Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
