MEDIUM 6.5REMOTEWATCHLISTMITIGATEDOWNGRADEUPGRADE

CVE-2026-71225 is a medium-severity flaw (CVSS 6.5) affecting hardened images, openshift container platform, libkcapi. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

A flaw was found in libkcapi. When performing one-shot symmetric cipher operations on large inputs (over 64 KiB) in stateful modes such as Counter (CTR) or Cipher Block Chaining (CBC), the library improperly reuses the Initialization Vector (IV) for each internal data chunk. A remote attacker could potentially exploit this by making an application that uses libkcapi process specially crafted large inputs. This can lead to a significant weakening

Why this priority

  • Public exploit reference
  • Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action
  • On your watchlist

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Timeline

redhat hardened images MITIGATE
Affected: all versions
Fixed in: no fixed release known
Safe to downgrade to: no unaffected older release
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy hardened-images || rpm -q hardened-images || hardened-images --version
No fixed or unaffected release known
Apply the vendor mitigation from the advisory, disable the affected feature, or restrict network access.
redhat openshift container platform DOWNGRADE
Affected: 4.0
Fixed in: no fixed release known
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 4.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy openshift-container-platform || rpm -q openshift-container-platform || openshift-container-platform --version
2. No fixed release: DOWNGRADE to a release before 4.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison openshift-container-platform sudo apt install openshift-container-platform=<VERSION_BEFORE_4.0> sudo apt-mark hold openshift-container-platform
2. No fixed release: DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list openshift-container-platform sudo dnf downgrade openshift-container-platform-<VERSION_BEFORE_4.0> sudo dnf versionlock add openshift-container-platform
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
smuellerdd libkcapi UPGRADE
Affected: >= 0.10.1 and < 1.5.1
Fixed in: 1.5.1
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 0.10.1
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy libkcapi || rpm -q libkcapi || libkcapi --version
2. UPGRADE to 1.5.1 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade libkcapi
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade libkcapi
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 0.10.1 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison libkcapi sudo apt install libkcapi=<VERSION_BEFORE_0.10.1> sudo apt-mark hold libkcapi
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list libkcapi sudo dnf downgrade libkcapi-<VERSION_BEFORE_0.10.1> sudo dnf versionlock add libkcapi
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
