CRITICAL 10.0EXPLOITEDREMOTEUPGRADE
CVE-2026-85706 is a critical-severity flaw (CVSS 10.0) affecting gitlab, reported as exploited in the wild. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.
GitLab has remediated an issue in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions from 18.7 before 18.11.12, 19.0 before 19.0.9, 19.1 before 19.1.8, 19.2 before 19.2.6, and 19.3 before 19.3.2 that, under certain conditions, an unauthenticated user could have read arbitrary files from the GitLab server due to improper path confinement and missing authentication enforcement in the repository commits API.
Why this priority
- Critical severity
- EPSS top 1%: very likely to be exploited
- Exploited in the wild (CISA KEV)
- Public exploit reference
- CISA SSVC: automatable with total technical impact
- Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action
A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Safe to downgrade to: a release before 18.7.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy gitlab || rpm -q gitlab || gitlab --version
2. UPGRADE to 18.11.12 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade gitlab
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade gitlab
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 18.7.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison gitlab
sudo apt install gitlab=<VERSION_BEFORE_18.7.0>
sudo apt-mark hold gitlab
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list gitlab
sudo dnf downgrade gitlab-<VERSION_BEFORE_18.7.0>
sudo dnf versionlock add gitlab
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
