CRITICAL 9.9WATCHLISTUPGRADE

CVE-2026-85748 is a critical-severity flaw (CVSS 9.9) affecting mariadb. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 12.3.1 until 12.3.3 and 13.0.2, SYS_REFCURSOR handling is affected because cursor-array reallocation can leave stale references in routine contexts. A low-privileged attacker can open a large number of SYS_REFCURSORs and then fetch one to trigger a use-after-free that can enable remote code execution when combined with another vulnerability. This issue is fixed in versions 12.3.3

Timeline

mariadb mariadb UPGRADE
Affected: >= 12.3.1 and < 12.3.3 · 13.0.1
Fixed in: 12.3.3
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 12.3.1
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy mariadb || rpm -q mariadb || mariadb --version
2. UPGRADE to 12.3.3 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade mariadb
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade mariadb
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 12.3.1 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison mariadb sudo apt install mariadb=<VERSION_BEFORE_12.3.1> sudo apt-mark hold mariadb
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list mariadb sudo dnf downgrade mariadb-<VERSION_BEFORE_12.3.1> sudo dnf versionlock add mariadb
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
