CVE-2026-93588: ImageMagick before 7.1.2-31 and before 6.9.13-56 contains a NULL pointer dereference in the PNM coder

Routine
LOW 3.1UPGRADE

CVE-2026-93588 is a low-severity flaw (CVSS 3.1) affecting imagemagick. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

ImageMagick before 7.1.2-31 and before 6.9.13-56 contains a NULL pointer dereference in the PNM coder. When the coder reaches a memory (resource) limit at a specific point during processing, the failed allocation is not handled and a NULL pointer is dereferenced, which can lead to a denial of service (application crash) when processing a specially crafted or sufficiently large PNM image.

Fixed in: 6.9.13-56, 7.1.2-31
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 7.0.0-0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy imagemagick || rpm -q imagemagick || imagemagick --version
2. UPGRADE to 6.9.13-56 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade imagemagick
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade imagemagick
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 7.0.0-0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison imagemagick sudo apt install imagemagick=<VERSION_BEFORE_7.0.0-0> sudo apt-mark hold imagemagick
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list imagemagick sudo dnf downgrade imagemagick-<VERSION_BEFORE_7.0.0-0> sudo dnf versionlock add imagemagick
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
