CVE-2026-110838 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 7.5) affecting freerdp. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

FreeRDP shadow server from 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 dispatches input PDUs during the Confirm Active state before authentication, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject keyboard input. Attackers can negotiate TLS-only RDP and send an input PDU without Confirm Active to inject synthetic keystrokes into the host user's X11 session via XTEST.

Why this priority

  • High severity
  • Public exploit reference
  • Remotely exploitable, no login, no user action

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Affected: >= 3.0.0 and < 3.32.0
Fixed in: 3.32.0
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 3.0.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy freerdp || rpm -q freerdp || freerdp --version
2. UPGRADE to 3.32.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade freerdp

sudo dnf upgrade freerdp
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 3.0.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison freerdp sudo apt install freerdp=<VERSION_BEFORE_3.0.0> sudo apt-mark hold freerdp
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list freerdp sudo dnf downgrade freerdp-<VERSION_BEFORE_3.0.0> sudo dnf versionlock add freerdp
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
