CVE-2023-27534 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 8.8) affecting curl, fedora, active iq unified manager. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.

A path traversal vulnerability exists in curl <8.0.0 SFTP implementation causes the tilde (~) character to be wrongly replaced when used as a prefix in the first path element, in addition to its intended use as the first element to indicate a path relative to the user's home directory. Attackers can exploit this flaw to bypass filtering or execute arbitrary code by crafting a path like /~2/foo while accessing a server with a specific user.

Why this priority

  • High severity
  • Public exploit reference

A fixed release or distro patch exists.

Timeline

haxx curl UPGRADE
Affected: >= 7.18.0 and <= 7.88.1
Fixed in: newer than 7.88.1
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 7.18.0
1. Check installed version
apt-cache policy curl || rpm -q curl || curl --version
2. UPGRADE to newer than 7.88.1 (Debian / Ubuntu)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade curl
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
sudo dnf upgrade curl
Note
Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 7.18.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt-cache madison curl sudo apt install curl=<VERSION_BEFORE_7.18.0> sudo apt-mark hold curl
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
dnf --showduplicates list curl sudo dnf downgrade curl-<VERSION_BEFORE_7.18.0> sudo dnf versionlock add curl
Downgrade risk
Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
