CVE-2024-2398: When an application tells libcurl it wants to allow HTTP/2 server push, and the amount of received headers for HIGH 8.6 REMOTE UPGRADE UPGRADE MITIGATE
CVE-2024-2398 is a high-severity flaw (CVSS 8.6) affecting curl, macos, fedora. Below: why it ranks where it does, which versions are affected, what to do, and the exact commands.
When an application tells libcurl it wants to allow HTTP/2 server push, and the amount of received headers for the push surpasses the maximum allowed limit (1000), libcurl aborts the server push. When aborting, libcurl inadvertently does not free all the previously allocated headers and instead leaks the memory. Further, this error condition fails silently and is therefore not easily detected by an application.

Affected: >= 7.44.0 and < 8.7.0
Fixed in: 8.7.0
Safe to downgrade to: a release before 7.44.0
1. Check installed version
Copy apt-cache policy curl || rpm -q curl || curl --version
2. UPGRADE to 8.7.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
Copy sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade curl
2. UPGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
Copy sudo dnf upgrade curl
Note
Copy Distros often backport fixes without changing the version number. Confirm with the distro advisory or changelog.
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE to a release before 7.44.0 (Debian / Ubuntu)
Copy apt-cache madison curl
sudo apt install curl=<VERSION_BEFORE_7.44.0>
sudo apt-mark hold curl
3. If no update is available yet, DOWNGRADE (RHEL / Amazon Linux / Fedora)
Copy dnf --showduplicates list curl
sudo dnf downgrade curl-<VERSION_BEFORE_7.44.0>
sudo dnf versionlock add curl
Downgrade risk
Copy Downgrading can break dependent software and may reopen older bugs. Read the distro advisory first and test on a non-production host.
After downgrade
Copy Restart the service, and keep the package held until a fixed release ships.
